An Evening for Education, presented by the Bazarsky Family Foundation

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Newport Public Education Foundation has announced the recipients of its annual Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations that significantly contribute to the students of Newport’s public schools.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Friends of Education: David and Carol Bazarsky
  • Partner in Education: Corrigan Financial
  • Unsung Hero: Marcin Rembisz

The awards will be presented during An Evening for Education, presented by the Bazarsky Family Foundation and scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Young Building (Pell Center), located at 518 Bellevue Avenue. The event will also celebrate the 2022-2023 Newport Public Schools teacher of the year: Carla Jewell, a special educator at Pell Elementary School.

“This year’s award recipients represent what is so special about our public schools and our city,” said Kate Borgueta, president of the foundation. “It is always amazing when our community members and organizations step up to the challenge of providing additional enrichment experiences for our students.”

Parents, educators and friends are all invited to attend An Evening for Education to learn more about how the Newport Public Education Foundation directly and positively impacts the students of Newport’s public schools.

Annual Appeal

Each year, the Newport Public Education Foundation awards more than $20,000 in grants to classroom teachers and community partners to provide innovative educational experiences to the children of Newport.

We invite you to help us continue our mission. Give now.

In 2019, we funded enrichment grants at Pell Elementary School, Thompson Middle School and Rogers High School. We also supported community partnerships such as the Rough Point art education program, a longtime collaboration with the Newport Restoration Foundation in which students produce artwork to be displayed at Rough Point.

We were thrilled by the number of grant requests we received, however our budget did not allow us to fully fund all grants and the grants committee had to make some very difficult decisions.

With an excellent response to our annual appeal, we may be able to reconsider funding some of these very worthy projects. Give now.

Despite the strong leadership and teaching in our schools, Newport Public Schools continue to be challenged in many ways. Students and educators need our financial support to maintain a high standard of learning.

Many of these experiential programs that make our schools special are not funded in the regular school budget. Our mission is to bridge that gap by providing teachers with the funds they need to provide the best possible education to our students.

Newport Night Run

Run the night at the Newport Night Run! The city by the sea’s annual after-hours 5K starts and finishes at Rogers High School and benefits the Newport Public Education Foundation. This one-of-a-kind course showcases some of Newport’s most beautiful rural roads, including parts of Ocean Avenue and Hazard Road. Walkers and runners of all ages and paces are welcome to participate!

A portion of all registration fees and 100 percent of all sponsorship fees go directly to the Newport Public Education Foundation.

During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Newport Public Education Foundation has awarded more than $25,000 in grants to classroom teachers and community partners.

Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Awards

The Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Awards recognize individuals and organizations that significantly contribute to the students of Newport’s public schools. Currently, the Newport Public Education Foundation bestows three awards: Friend of Education, Partner in Education and Unsung Hero in Education. The awards are named for the late Noreen Stonor Drexel in recognition of her 22 years of service as a special advisor to the foundation.

Friends of Education: Peter and Melinda Gerard. The Gerards established the Loti Falk Gaffney Pell Elementary School Music Empowerment Trust, also known as the Pell Inspiration Program, to introduce Pell students to inspired musicians through an annual artists-in-residence program. Using music as the medium, a typical engagement is a multi-day program in which the artists perform in a variety of settings.

Partner in Education: Sail Newport. Since its founding in 1983, Sail Newport has been making significant contributions to the children of Newport. Visits to the educational exploration center at the Volvo Ocean Race’s race village and the implementation of a learn-to-sail program for Pell fourth-graders have greatly enriched the lives of students in the Newport Public Schools.

Unsung Heroes in Education: Mitchell and Jennifer Jackson. The Jacksons have revitalized the Thompson Middle School PTO, which supports programs that are focused on building school spirit and enhancing the education of Thompson students. The Jacksons also served as facilitators in the recent Community Conversation series and are vocal proponents of adequate education funding and equal opportunities for all students.
